Is science the solution to everything?

Where should humankind invest its resources and why? Is it in search for answers to fundamental questions about the Universe or rather in an attempt to save our civilization from soon becoming extinct?

Where do we come from? What is life? Why we remember the past but not the future? Can we travel into the earliest and darkest part of the Universe?

Is the Universe finite? What is the nature of consciousness?

The above are some of the most fundamental questions humankind is searching the answers to. Yet we don’t know how much time is left before our own actions and mistakes may lead to our own destruction. Avoiding climate disasters, pandemics of global proportions, poisoning of the environment we live in, requires focus on solving pragmatic challenges.

What should we focus on? Where should the governments invest research funds and why? What will bring humankind more benefit: fundamental research or applied science? Maybe something else? Our financial and human resources are limited. What is the best investment, the best bet for the mankind?

A written essay is the only literary form accepted (no poems, plays, songs, etc.). To learn more about how to write an essay, please read Essay Structure | (harvard.edu).
