Supporting science and research is one of the key areas that the ESET Foundation has decided to strategically support because of its importance to society. The tradition of recognizing excellent scientists and researchers was launched at the first ESET Science Award ceremony on 18 October 2019. Its mission and meaning were confirmed by a public survey commissioned by the ESET Foundation at the beginning of 2019. Among other things, the survey showed that up to three-quarters of respondents think that science and its results are important to society and contribute to shaping their opinions and subsequent actions. The ESET Science Award laureates go through a rigorous evaluation process that meets international standards.

The ESET Foundation has expressed its public commitment to showcasing the key personalities of science and thus raising the social status of science in Slovakia. An international jury headed by Nobelist Erwin Neher awarded three scientists in three categories. In the main category of Outstanding Contributor to Slovak Science, the laureate was Ján Tkáč, in the category of Outstanding Young Scientist in Slovakia under 35, the laureate was Ľubomíra Tóthová, and in the category of Outstanding Academic, the laureate was Tomáš Vinař.

The members of the internationally renowned jury, chaired by the Nobel Prize Laureate in Physiology and Medicine, German biophysicist Erwin Neher, were Swiss physicist primarily focused on ultrafast laser technology, Ursula Keller, German biologist pioneering research in the field of embryonic development of vertebrates, Carl-Philipp Heisenberg, Hungarian mathematician László Lovász, and American artist and technologist whose work helps teach people about an ethical life in technology, Christopher Csíkszentmihályi.

“The promise of information technology was to bring detailed and safe information to everybody. In reality this is compromised by the intentional spread of false information and by attempts to do harm to users of information. ESET’s efforts, both as a company and through its award stand for safe and correct information, which is essential for progress in our times,“ said Erwin Neher, 1991 Nobel Prize Laureate.
