SCIENCE EVENT OF THE YEAR

Michel Mayor at ESET Science Award 2023

Professor Michel Mayor, a renowned astrophysicist, in 1995, together with Didier Queloz, discovered the first extrasolar planet, named 51 Pegasi b, orbiting a solar-type star, 51 Pegasi, in our home galaxy, the Milky Way. In 2017, Professor Mayor was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery. His team is responsible for finding about half of the exoplanets discovered to date, of which there 5,000 exoplanets in the Milky Way alone. Michel Mayor is a principal investigator of the HARPS consortium planet search survey, which has discovered a growing population of super earths and Neptune-like small mass planets.

„Can we recognize intelligent life in the Universe?“

Watch Nobel Laureate and astrophysicist, Michel Mayor, and astrophysicist and founder of Starmus festival, Garik Israelian, in conversation with science popularizer, David Eicher, talking about the potential for discovering intelligent life outside of our own planet, solar system and galaxy. How far along are we from encountering intelligent life? What should we do when we encounter it? Should space exploration focus on finding intelligent life or additional resources for our planet? The discussion is organized by the ESET Foundation in cooperation with Starmus Festival, taking place in Bratislava, Slovakia in May 2024, to kick-start a global conversation about “the future of our home planet”, the theme of Starmus VII.
