James C. Gee, Ph.D., is Professor of Radiologic Science in Radiology and of Computer and Information Science at the University of Pennsylvania. He directs the Penn Image Computing and Science Laboratory (PICSL), where his team leads internationally recognized research in medical image analysis, computational anatomy, and radiological AI. Their work has enabled population imaging studies, digital atlases, and open-source tools that support hundreds of imaging studies globally each year.

Dr. Gee also serves as Co-Director of the Translational Bio-Imaging Center and Director of the HHMI-NIBIB Interfaces Program in Biomedical Imaging and Informational Sciences, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across engineering, medicine, and computer science. He is Program Director for the Online Master of Science in Engineering in Data Science (MSE-DS Online) at Penn Engineering.

He earned dual B.S. degrees in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington, followed by a Ph.D. in Computer and Information Science from Penn, where he received an NIH R01 grant while pursuing his dissertation research on brain mapping.

Dr. Gee’s contributions have been recognized through election as a Distinguished Investigator of the Academy for Radiology & Biomedical Imaging Research and Fellow of AIMBE, SPIE, ISMRM, IEEE, and MICCAI. His work develops computational imaging techniques to enhance medicine.

Born and raised in Nigeria, Dr. Gee is committed to advancing global health equity, with a focus on developing medical AI for low-resource environments across Africa.
