Statute ESET Science Award 2020


The ESET Foundation, in cooperation with ESET, spol. s r. o.:

  1. being acutely aware of the key significance of science in the development and prosperity of society,
  2. intending to focus its efforts to enhance scientists‘ motivation to achieve internationally acclaimed scientific results,
  3. with the intention also to enhance the recognition of Slovak scientists‘ results at an international level and thus to elevate the prestige of Slovak science globally,

supports the Slovak science community and the overall development of Slovakia by way of the prestigious ESET Science Award.

The award is granted to individuals in three categories:

  1. Outstanding individual contributor to Slovak science;
  2. Exceptional young scientist in Slovakia under the age of 35;
  3. Outstanding Academic.

One award is granted in each category once per year.

  1. Outstanding individual contributor to Slovak science

    1. The award is granted to an individual whose work results in the past 10 years have contributed exceptionally to highlighting Slovak science in the European or global science area, and which have a remarkable actual or potential impact on their respective scientific field;
    2. The nominee must be a scientist associated with an Organisation that is demonstrably involved in science and research (particularly Slovak universities, institutes of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, sectoral research departments, legal persons with registered offices in Slovakia) (hereinafter as the “Organisation”). Furthermore, he/she must have been the Organisation’s employee, shareholder, member, statutory body or a member of the statutory body, proxy, permanent public service employee or an employee performing work in the public interest, for not less than three years before the date of closing of the nominations, whereby the vast majority of the scientific results for which they were nominated, must have been achieved within the Organisation;
    3. The nominee must operate in one of the scientific fields 1.– 4., as defined by the Decree of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic No. 1055/2003 – 11 dated 5 August 2003 concerning research and development disciplines and the code list of research and development disciplines;
    4. The nominee must be regarded as an outstanding scientist in their respective scientific field (hereinafter as “Nominee’s expertise”);
    5. The Nominee’s expertise is demonstrated by the following criteria:
      1. authorship or co-authorship of a significant published work or published works with a verifiable impact on the global research area;
      2. citations in acknowledged Current Content journals with a verifiable impact on the global research area;
      3. involvement in international research projects with a verifiable impact on the global research area;
      4. enhancing the professional recognition of Slovak science and research abroad in a manner other than outlined above;
      5. contribution of the scientific research work with an impact on society.
    6. An important criterion is also the nominee’s verifiable exceptional contribution to Slovak society;
    7. An award laureate may be nominated again three years after obtaining the award.

  2. Exceptional young scientist in Slovakia under the age of 35

    1. The award is granted to a young scientist whose activity may be regarded as an exceptional contribution to the Slovak scientific field with great future potential;
    2. The nominee must be a scientist who has successfully concluded doctoral studies and who is not older than 35 years as of the calendar year of their nomination. He/she must have been cooperating with the same Organisation for not less than three years before the date of closing of the nominations in the respective year;
    3. The nominee must operate in one of the scientific fields 1.– 4., as defined by the Decree of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic No. 1055/2003 – 11 dated 5 August 2003 concerning research and development disciplines and the code list of research and development disciplines;
    4. The nominee’s expertise must be demonstrated by fulfilment of at least two criteria listed in Article 1 e) points i) to iv) and at all times by the criterion listed in Article 1 e) point v);;
    5. An important criterion is also the nominee’s verifiable exceptional contribution in the respective research field on a global level of science in the respective field;
    6. Each award winner may be granted the award only once.

  3. Outstanding Academic

    1. The award is granted to an individual whose activities have delivered an exceptional academic contribution in his/her field;
    2. The nominee must be a university academic working at a higher education institution in Slovakia (vysoká škola) as defined by the Act No. 131/2002 Coll., on Higher Education Institutions as amended (hereinafter as the “University”) for at least 3 years. The nominee must have been working at the said University with a stipulated weekly working time (i.e. the extent of the employment relationship must be 100%);
    3. The nominee must have been active in one of the below-mentioned fields of study grouped according to www.portalvs.sk, a university portal, that takes into account the Slovak set of study fields published as a decree of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic no. 244/2019 Coll. of the set of study fields of the Slovak Republic:
      1. natural sciences, mathematics and informatics;
      2. technical sciences;
      3. agricultural and veterinary sciences;
      4. medical and health sciences and fields focused on improving quality of life;
    4. The nominee’s expertise is assessed according to his/her academic skills and scientific productivity as demonstrated over the previous 6 years, pursuant to the following criteria:
      1. conducting and initiating of classes;
      2. professional results achieved by supervised students;
      3. participation in accredited study programmes;
      4. making the scientific field visible through the organisation of student events or other forms of promotion;
      5. authorship or co-authorship of (a) significant publication(s);
      6. citations in reputable journals with high impact;
      7. participation in international research projects;
      8. student feedback and references;
    5. Each award winner may be granted the award only once.
  1. Outstanding individual contributor to Slovak science
    • A scientist who meets the conditions may nominate himself/herself, or he/she can be nominated by the Organisation with which he/she is cooperating, with his/her consent;
    • Nominations are submitted electronically in English by filling out the form on the ESET Science Award webpage (www.ESETScienceAward.sk).

  2. Exceptional young scientist in Slovakia under the age of 35
    • The nomination may be submitted by the direct superior/manager in the nominee’s organisation, with the nominee’s consent;
    • A scientist who meets the conditions may not nominate himself/herself;
    • Nominations are submitted electronically in English by filling out the form on the ESET Science Award webpage (www.ESETScienceAward.sk).

  3. Outstanding Academic
    • Any university academic who meets the conditions above may nominate himself/herself, or he/she can be nominated with his/her consent by a superior at the University for which he/she works;
    • Nominations are submitted electronically by completion of the form on the ESET Science Award webpage (www.ESETScienceAward.sk).

Laureates of the award in the categories “Outstanding individual contributor to Slovak science” and “Exceptional young scientist in Slovakia under the age of 35” are selected from 10 finalists by an international committee comprised of selected international experts (“International Committee”), the members of which are published annually on the ESET Science Award webpage (www.ESETScienceAward.sk). Selecting the 10 finalists is ensured by the ESET Foundation via committees comprised of experts from various scientific fields.

The winner of the award in the “Outstanding Academic” category is selected by an evaluation committee comprised of selected Slovak experts, whose names will be published on the ESET Science Award webpage (www.ESETScienceAward.sk) after the official announcement of the winner.

The ESET Science Award is granted annually since 2019. The opening and closing dates for nominations for the respective calendar year are published annually on the ESET Science Award webpage (www.ESETScienceAward.sk) in the course of the respective year. Award laureates are announced during the celebratory gala evening in October of the respective calendar year.

  1. Outstanding individual contributor to Slovak science
    The laureate receives a financial prize in the amount of EUR 100,000. The prize is not bound to any particularpurpose. A symbolic work of art is also a part of the prize.

  2. Exceptional young scientist in Slovakia under the age of 35
    The laureate receives a financial prize in the amount of EUR 5,000. The prize is not bound to any particular purpose. A symbolic work of art is also a part of the prize.

  3. Outstanding Academic
    The laureate receives a financial prize in the amount of EUR 5,000. The prize is not bound to any particular purpose. A symbolic work of art is also a part of the prize.

By submitting a nomination or giving consent to submission of a nomination, the nominee confirms his/her consent to the nomination and the corresponding obligations as described below:

  • Participation in the celebratory gala evening of the respective year;
  • Presentation of his/her work within the remit of the scientific award project during activities intended to promote recognition of the project. The scope of the work presentation will be personally agreed.

By submitting the nomination or giving consent to the submitting of the nomination, the nominee freely and unconditionally consents to the conditions and the ESET Science Award Statute. For the purposes of securing the handling and registration of the submission, assessment by the commission, notifying of the results, organisation of the celebratory gala evening and the handling of its invitations and commercial marketing within the framework of the ESET Science Award, the nominee also acknowledges that the ESET Foundation may process personal data which is a part of the nomination and the corresponding documentation. If the nomination is submitted by a third party, an essential condition of the submission is the nominee’s consent to the submission.Part of the submission consent is also the nominee’s explicit consent to this statute and the conditions of personal data protection as outlined at www.ESETScienceAward.sk.

This statute had been approved by the ESET Foundation Governing Board and its current wording is available on the ESET Science Award webpage (www.ESETScienceAward.sk).

This statute comes into force on 16 March 2020. Th is date repeals the STATUTE of the ESET Science Award that came into force on 7 February 2019 and the STATUTE of the ESET Science Award for the Outstanding Academic category that came into force on 13 June 2019.
