Serge Haroche is a physicist and Nobel Laureate known for pioneering experimental methods that make it possible to observe, measure and manipulate individual quantum systems. A leading figure in quantum optics and cavity quantum electrodynamics, he has profoundly advanced our understanding of the interaction between light and matter at the most fundamental level.
Dr. Serge Haroche is a French physicist, Professor Emeritus at the Collège de France, and a member of the Institut de France. Born in Casablanca in 1944, he studied at the École normale supérieure in Paris and completed his doctoral work under the supervision of Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, later a Nobel Laureate himself. Over the course of his career, he has held research and teaching positions at CNRS, École Polytechnique, Université Paris-VI, École normale supérieure, Yale University and the Collège de France.
Dr. Haroche is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking contributions to atomic physics, quantum optics and cavity quantum electrodynamics. His research has focused on the fundamental interaction between matter and radiation, particularly through the use of Rydberg atoms — highly excited atomic states that are exceptionally sensitive to microwave radiation — and superconducting cavities capable of trapping photons. These systems enabled new ways to study individual photons without destroying them, opening a path to direct experimental tests of the laws of quantum mechanics.
His experiments helped transform quantum physics from a field dominated by theoretical thought experiments into one where single quantum objects could be controlled and observed in the laboratory. By sending atoms through cavities containing only a few photons, Dr. Haroche and his collaborators developed methods to monitor quantum states, study decoherence, and explore the boundary between the quantum and classical worlds. These advances have had a lasting impact on quantum information science and on the development of technologies based on the control of individual quantum systems.
Dr. Haroche’s scientific career has been closely associated with the Laboratoire Kastler Brossel in Paris, where he led the electrodynamics of simple systems group. He was appointed Professor of Quantum Physics at the Collège de France in 2001 and later served as Administrator — President — of the Collège de France from 2012 to 2015. He also headed the physics department at École normale supérieure and has held visiting positions at leading institutions including Stanford, Harvard, MIT, Yale and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
In 2012, Dr. Haroche was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, shared with David J. Wineland, “for ground-breaking experimental methods that enable measuring and manipulation of individual quantum systems.” His other major distinctions include the CNRS Gold Medal, the Einstein Prize for Laser Science, the Humboldt Prize, the Franklin Institute’s Michelson Medal, the Charles Hard Townes Award, the Herbert Walther Prize and an ERC Advanced Grant.
Beyond his landmark discoveries, Dr. Haroche is widely respected for his role in shaping modern quantum science and for communicating the significance of quantum physics to broader scientific and public audiences. His work continues to influence research at the frontier of quantum measurement, quantum information and the foundations of physics.
